There are still a few weeks left to apply for the Deutschlandstipendium. But what are the benefits and what can you expect? To find out, I spoke to a two-time Germany Scholarship holder.
I'm talking about Martin Höcherl, who is currently in his sixth Bachelor's semester on the Energy and Raw Materials course. He received his first scholarship in his third Bachelor's semester and was able to apply for it with his grades from the second semester. His sponsors were first the Association of Friends and then the Hans-Joachim Tessner Foundation from Goslar.

What are the advantages of the Deutschlandstipendium?
First of all, of course, the financial aspect: you receive a monthly grant of 300 euros for at least two semesters. Half of this amount is provided by private sponsors such as companies, foundations or private individuals and the other half by the federal government. However, you also have the opportunity to actively network during your studies. For example, you can exchange ideas with your sponsors to make initial contacts in the world of work. "Some scholarship holders have even been given the opportunity to write their thesis with their sponsor," said Martin during the interview. The Deutschlandstipendium is also not a political or religious foundation. "It was important to me that I didn't need to have a certain basic attitude to receive the scholarship," he explained. Foreign students can also apply for funding.
What do you have to do to become a Deutschlandstipendium scholarship holder?
In principle, you can apply from your first semester. In addition to your grades, social factors also play a role. These can be, for example
- Social or political commitment
- Social neediness
- First practical experience
- Or special awards.
Martin has been a dormitory speaker for two and a half years and was therefore able to apply for the Deutschlandstipendium. You can also receive funding alongside a BAföG grant.
To apply for the scholarship, you should submit a letter of motivation of no more than one page and a CV in tabular form. You should also submit all important documents such as (internship) certificates, transcripts and other important qualifications. This is currently still possible until July 31. The scholarship holders will then be selected over the course of the summer. This also includes a personal interview. "Professional interest comes across particularly well in the interview," advises Martin. An introductory event then takes place in November. This is where you get to know your sponsor and the other scholarship holders and can make your first contacts.
