Music at the TU Clausthal, Vol. 1

When they perform, the concert venues in Clausthal are always well attended: the Big Band, the Rock, Pop and Jazz Choir, the Symphony Orchestra and the University Choir. The four TU Clausthal ensembles offer something for every musical taste. And the best thing is that anyone who enjoys music can take part. Do you play an instrument or like to sing, would you like to meet new people and are you looking for a suitable hobby? I've taken a closer look at the music on offer at the TU. Maybe there's something suitable for you.

In the first article, I take a look at the groovING TUC Big Band and the singING TUC Vocals. The Big Band and the choir were only founded a few years ago and have grown steadily since then. Both tend to focus on more modern styles of music. In the text, you can find out whether you need your own instrument for the big band and which German rapper you can cover with the choir in January.

Fast & modern: groovING TUC - the TU Clausthal Big Band

Fast rhythms and jazzy sounds - with the groovING TUC Big Band, the name says it all. The musicians have been playing together since 2017. Many of them study, teach or work at Clausthal University of Technology, but music enthusiasts from the surrounding area also join in. Anyone who plays an instrument is welcome to join the Big Band - there is no entrance exam.

If you don't have your own instrument, you can borrow one from the ensemble's extensive collection. In addition to trumpets, trombones, electric guitars and saxophones, keyboard instruments, drums and technical equipment are also available. Important to know: The Big Band is organized as an association. Student members currently pay five euros a month, staff members ten euros. The association uses this amount to finance instruments, sheet music, workshops and other costs incurred.

Before you decide to become a member, you can attend a non-binding rehearsal and get to know the ensemble. The weekly rehearsal takes place on Fridays in one of the two rehearsal rooms, either in the Robert Koch School or in the Math Institute at Clausthal University of Technology. All current rehearsal dates and locations are published on the Big Band website.

Each semester, the Big Band puts together a new program, which it presents in a final concert at the end of the semester. In addition, various workshops and courses are offered in which the members can expand their musical skills.
In order to be able to perform at various events in between, there is a smaller jazz combo alongside the big band. The group rehearses pieces that it can play in small or alternating formations if the entire big band is too large for a performance.

The next opportunity to see the groovING TUC Big Band live is on February 10. The musicians will perform their current program together with the Rock, Pop and Jazz Choir at the end-of-semester concert in the Aula Academica. One day later, on February 11, they will perform at the Energy Research Center of Lower Saxony (EFZN) in Goslar.

Rehearsal times: Friday, 6 to 8 pm, Robert-Koch-Schule (Berliner Straße 16) or Matheinstitut der TU Clausthal (Erzstraße 1)

From the 20s to Apache 207: singing TUC Vocals - the rock, pop & jazz choir

The Rock, Pop and Jazz Choir of Clausthal University of Technology provides the appropriate vocal pieces for the Big Band. The choir was founded out of the big band and is part of the association. The two ensembles usually perform together at the end-of-semester concert, but the choir also rehearses its own program.

Anyone who enjoys singing can join singING TUC. Therefore, as with the big band, there are no auditions and it is not even necessary to be able to read music. The choir director provides the singers with the respective parts as audio files for practicing.

Anyone interested can come along and listen during rehearsal times. The rock, pop and jazz choir meets every Monday in the auditorium of the Hauptschule and Realschule. Apart from a short summer break, rehearsals also take place during the semester break.

In January, the choir also offers a workshop lasting several days for young people aged 16 to 27. The offer is aimed at those who would like to rehearse modern pop pieces by German artists in the choir. If you like songs by Apache 207, Namika or Mark Forster and would like to sing them together under professional guidance, you can still register for the workshop. The one-off participation fee is 50 euros.

The next performances of the choir will take place together with the Big Band on February 10 and 11 in the auditorium and in the EFZN in Goslar.

Rehearsal times: Monday, 5.45 to 7.15 p.m., auditorium of the Haupt- und Realschule (Berliner Straße 48)

Modern or classic?

The big band and the rock, pop and jazz choir definitely put everyone in a good mood at each of their performances - both the performers on stage and the listeners in the audience. If you like more modern music, you'll be in good hands with these two.

In Vol. 2 on music at Clausthal University of Technology, things get more classical: I'll tell you what makes the symphony orchestra and the university choir so special. And why an orchestral concert surprised me.
