It has a long tradition in Clausthal-Zellerfeld: the Oberharzer Bergbauernmarkt. Every Thursday from June to September, Bornhardstraße is transformed into a marketplace. Traders from the region offer their wares. From fruit and vegetables to household goods and handicrafts, everything is on offer.
The popular event could not take place for two years due to coronavirus. The rush is all the greater when I enter the mountain farmers' market for the first time on a Thursday evening in June. The summer temperatures of 25 degrees immediately put me in a fairground mood. Live music is playing on the stage at the entrance, it smells of grilled meat and lard cake and people are queuing up in front of the stalls.
From the entrance directly on Goslarsche Straße, the Bergbauernmarkt stretches the length of Bornhardtstraße and ends at the Kunsthandwerkerhof. On Clausthal's "Green Mile", one stall follows the next. Here you can store for clothes, hats, bags, fabrics and other household items - and eat delicious food: In addition to Clausthal herb roast in a roll and Harz cheese, there are bratwurst, lángos, crêpes, gingerbread hearts and even fish sandwiches. If you prefer to cook at home with fresh ingredients, you can buy potatoes, salad, carrots and herbs directly from local farmers - often cheaper than in the supermarket.
Many regional traders present their specialties at the Bergbauernmarkt: The Immenhof farm from Krebeck sells its own honey and mead, at the stand of the Eggers manufactory for sausage and meat specialties from Osterode you can sample the range on offer and CLZ cigars & spirits from Adolph-Roemer-Straße will also be there.
The Bergbauernmarkt is not only known for its large selection of food, but also for its wide range of arts and crafts. Inga's Lederschmiede from Windhausen, for example, sells handmade leather jewelry and the Kunsthandwerkerhof produces fine glassware. At the "Glashütte", it's worth taking a look at the in-house glass-blowing workshop - but watch out in midsummer, as the temperatures inside are high thanks to the furnace.
A cool drink is the perfect way to cool down. Whether at the beer cart, the wine stand or the brewery academy in the artisan courtyard, there is something for every taste. You have to queue everywhere, as the Oberharzer Bergbauernmarkt attracts numerous visitors from the village and the surrounding area. Many of them come almost every Thursday to meet up with friends and enjoy the summer. For this reason alone, the event is a real experience and definitely worth (at least) one visit!
